Wardrobe for time periods utilize difference sizing methods. For most of the 1st Century and Biblical Clothes they are worn a bit baggy, and then belted in. Width measurement is the circumference (plus a deep breath) for Chest/Bust Size. Length is Shoulder to Hem.
For other Period clothing check your circumferences for head, neck, chest, waist, full hip. I go by inches more often than modern clothing sizes, as those change through the decades. A large in 1950s is not the same as today.
Don‘t have a cloth tape measure? No problem… here is an easy trick. Find a non-stretchy cord or rope. Wrap around the area you are measuring. Then use a construction measuring tape or ruler to measure that length.
